Theoretical and Foundations of Nursing Research: Suicide among Children and Young Adults

The prevalence of suicide is an important social problem among children and adolescents worldwide. The teen years are stressful because they are filled with major life changes that trigger suicidal ideations. For example, it is during this period that teens exhibit body changes, changes in thoughts, feelings, stress, and confusion that can lead to self-harm (Miron et al., 2019). It is established that the existence of one or more mental health disorders increases the risk of suicide among children and adolescents. Likewise, impulsive behaviors, substance abuse, trauma, and family history predispose teens to suicide (Williams et al., 2022). Understanding the factors that increase the risk for suicide among children and adolescents can help to guide interventions to solve this problem.

Suicide in young adults and children continues to be a serious public health problem. In the United States, suicide rates for teens aged 15 to 19 years have tripled since the 1960s, not simply because of increased reporting but also because of increased mental health challenges (Miron et al., 2019). Increased use of alcohol and drug abuse among adolescents is thought to be the major cause of suicide. Research in the country indicates that suicide is the second leading cause of death for youths aged 15 to 24 years and is the 15th leading cause of death for this population worldwide (Williams et al., 2022). Further statistics indicate that boys are four times more likely to die from suicide while girls more frequently try to commit suicide than boys. It is important to collect data about the risk of suicide among children and youths to ensure effective measures are taken to prevent the increasing rate of suicide among this population.

The causes of suicide among youths and children are multifactorial. The rate of suicide in children is rare before puberty making suicide an issue of concern among adolescents. There is no single cause of suicide among adolescents but it has been associated with substance abuse and preexisting mental health issues (Miron et al., 2019). There is limited research on how factors like stress, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and home environments contribute to suicide. There are also other factors like bullying, access to firearms, and relationships that are now thought to increase the risk of suicide among youths (Williams et al., 2022). This research aims at understanding the perceived factors of suicide among youths and children. The findings from this research will be used to recommend social interventions to minimize the risk of suicide among children and youths.

Healthcare Policy and Advocacy: The Potential Impact of Nurses Holding Elected Office

An integrated conceptual model that focuses on both individual and proximal factors is required to analyze the causes of suicide among youths and children. The main concepts behind this study will include minority stress, internalized stigma, violence, substance abuse, and mental health challenges predisposing youths to suicide (Williams et al., 2022). A qualitative research approach will be used to collect data about suicide among youths and children. A phenomenological design will be the most appropriate method for collecting data to ensure information is obtained from participants’ experiences (Gray & Grove, 2021). This research approach is important because it seeks to understand the universal essence of a phenomenon and it investigates the everyday experiences of people.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of increased suicide among youths and children. The study will explore the perceived factors of suicide among the identified population and recommend practice changes to the healthcare system, families, and communities. This research is important to the nursing profession because it will revolutionalize new interventions to manage the challenge of suicide among youths and children. The healthcare system can use the study findings to plan for the care of at-risk individuals and use available resources to improve their mental well-being.
